CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Maeve's heart raced as she watched the scene unfold, her concern for Jordan overwhelming her senses.

The clash between Jordan and Jeremy forced her out of her feelings of fatigue, and all of a sudden, she was overwhelmed with concern for his well-being. As she walked over to him, her mind raced with questions.

She clamped her hand over her mouth, unsure what to do next.

Was he okay?

She rushed to Jordan's side, her eyes scanning his body for any signs of injury. Her voice quivered with a mix of anxiety and relief as she asked.

He gave her a dazed look and a half-hearted smile.

“Are you okay?” she asked. “Did you hit your head?”

“I’m – fine–” he said, between brief coughs as he regained his breath.

Jeremy stood up and began to announce to the room, "It's all right, everyone."

People were scrambling for the chips all over the floor, and the other dealers were all but able to keep the crowd at bay.

But as soon as she saw that Jordan wasn’t seriously hurt, she felt a huge well of relief.

“You didn’t have to do that,” she said.

“I know,” he answered.”

She knew that Jordan had a habit of letting cases take over his whole life, sometimes putting his personal safety and well-being on the line.

But she’d never seen him do something like that for her sake.

She promised herself she wouldn’t shrug off what happened. She wouldn’t let him keep investigating until she was sure he hadn’t been seriously hurt.

“I’m taking you to the hospital,” she said. “We need to make sure you don’t have a concussion.”

“What? Maeve, no…”

Jordan stood, looking like he had the wind knocked out of him. He kept a hand over his heart, where the dealer had run into him.

"I'm alright, Maeve. Just a few bumps and bruises, nothing serious." He stretched his shoulder.

Maeve pursed her lips, trying to determine if this was yet another front, a lie for his benefit and for hers.

Maeve's worry and anger began to ebb, replaced by a wave of gratitude that her partner was safe.

She grabbed his arm and pulled him away from Jeremy, who was still trying to scoop chips off of the floor and keep money-hungry customers from stealing them.

“Jordan,” she said. “I’m really worried about you. You have to stop throwing yourself into dangerous situations.”

He nodded. He looked into her eyes and seemed to understand how much he had truly frightened her.

"Jordan, you didn’t have to do that," Maeve murmured, her voice filled with remorse.

Jordan gently placed a hand on her shoulder, his touch offering reassurance. Did his hand linger a little longer than usual?

"We're a team, and we have each other's backs."

She took a deep breath, trying to steady her racing heartbeat. She reminded herself that their focus needed to be on the investigation and bringing the culprits to justice.

She looked over at Jeremy, who was still trying to remove people from the crowded table.

“I should arrest you right now for assault,” Maeve said. She heard her voice deepening as she said it, more out of anger than anything else.
